Dream Theater's 6:00 is Awesome

This represents the first time I really loved Dream Theater. When Pull Me Under was in heavy rotation on the radio (WAAF in Boston) I would have rather heard Guns 'N' Roses or Iron Maiden. But when Awake came out I was hooked. Everything lined up perfectly. Since it was Christmas related it reminded me of home; listening to the disc on my discman in the back of our minivan. The whole album is great and is probably one of my favorite albums of all time. However, since this song opens this masterpiece it will always have a special place in my prog heart.

Dream Theater
James LaBrie – vocals
John Myung – bass
John Petrucci – guitar
Kevin Moore – keyboards
Mike Portnoy – drums, percussion

Lyrics
"Six o'clock on a Christmas morning..."
"And for what?"
"Well, isn't it for the honor of God,
Aunt Kate?"
"I know all about the honor of God,
Mary Jane."

Six o'clock the siren kicks him from a dream
Tries to shake it off but it just won't stop
Can't find the strength but he's got promises to keep
And wood to chop before he sleeps

I may never get over
but never's better than now
I've got bases to cover

He's in the parking lot and he's just sitting in his car
It's nine o'clock but he can't get out
He lights a cigarette
and turns the music down
but just can't seem to shake that sound

Once I thought I'd get over
but it's too late for me now
I've got bases to cover

Melody walks through the door
and memory flies out the window
and nobody knows what they want
'til they finally let it all go

The pain inside
coming outside

So many ways to drown a man
So many ways to drag him down
Some are fast and some take years and years
Can't hear what he's saying when he's talking in his sleep
He finally found the sound but he's in too deep

I could never get over
Is it too late for me now?
Feel like blowing my cover

Melody walks through the door
and memory flies out the window
and nobody knows what they want
'til they finally let it all go

But don't cut your losses too soon
'cause you'll only be cutting your throat
And answer a call while you still hear at all
'cause nobody will if you won't

"Six o'clock on a Christmas morning..."
"I know all about the honor of God,
Mary..."
"I know all about the honor of God,
Mary Jane."

Opeth's Godhead's Lament is Awesome

The year was 2003, or maybe 2001 or 2004. 2002 is also possible. I was driving in Saugus Massachusetts and making a u-turn near the Taco Bell parking lot. I don't recall if I went into the Taco Bell and I don't recall where I was going. However, I remember this was the moment when I realized I love Opeth and this was the song that was playing.

Glass Hammer is Awesome

Time is stronger than my feeble desires
I watched you grow older but the island drew no closer
I can gaze from afar at the shore
Without wings I could never do more

Time spent fighting dragons is wasted, now I know
I wish I had learned to swim instead
But I didn't want to get my feet wet
Now I hear empty words on the wind
Echo back from the past once again

Time also must give in to the rules of the game it plays
All things can change, if it is our will
Love
Is stronger than you see - stronger than entropy
And we can defeat death, if it is our will

If I could only find the words to say
If I could ever find the words to say

Time is ever, time is losing
We have futures of our choosing
(So far away, yet so close)
As we go on we grow more like each other
The changes of time will bring us together

The journey of a thousand miles, the story goes
Begins not with a step but with the will to step
And so the day may yet come when I'm by your side.
